This free bench press calculator estimates your one-rep max (1RM) from a set you have actually completed — enter the weight you lifted and how many reps you got, and it returns your predicted max bench press instantly, with no signup and no math on your part. Estimating your max from a submaximal set is safer and, for most lifters, more useful than grinding out a true one-rep max attempt. A genuine 1RM test is risky under a loaded bar — especially benching alone in a garage gym without a spotter — and a bad rep on bench is uniquely dangerous. A good estimate off a hard set of 3–6 reps gets you a trustworthy number to program around without the barbell on your chest.
How to use it

Worked example: if you bench 185 lb for 8 reps, the calculator returns an estimated max of about 232 lb (Epley ≈ 234, Brzycki ≈ 230). Benched 225 for 5? That is an estimated 258 lb max — knocking on the door of the 2-plate-plus club. For the tightest estimate, use a set of about 3–6 reps; the equations are calibrated for low-rep work and drift as the reps climb.

The formulas (Epley, Brzycki & more)
There is no single “true” 1RM equation — there are several regression formulas, each fit to different data. This calculator shows five and defaults the headline number to the average of Epley and Brzycki, because those two are the most widely validated and their small biases (Epley runs slightly high, Brzycki slightly low at low reps) tend to cancel:
- Epley —
weight × (1 + reps/30). The most common; slightly generous. - Brzycki —
weight × 36 / (37 − reps). Slightly conservative; degrades fastest at high reps as it approaches its asymptote near 37 reps. - Lombardi —
weight × reps^0.10. A flatter power-curve fit. - O’Conner —
weight × (1 + 0.025 × reps). The simplest linear model. - Wathan —
100 × weight / (48.8 + 53.8 × e^(−0.075 × reps)). A regression variant often reported as the most accurate across the big-three lifts (LeSuer et al. 1997).

How accurate is it?
Estimation formulas are good but not perfect. In the validation literature (LeSuer et al. 1997; Reynolds et al. 2006) predicted maxes correlate above r = 0.95 with tested singles — the differences between formulas are absolute bias, not rank. Accuracy is best at 2–10 reps, tightest at about ≤6 reps, and typically within roughly ±3% in that range. Reynolds et al. found a 5-rep set among the most accurate inputs, which is why the calculator defaults to 5 reps. Above ~10 reps the estimates lose reliability — Brzycki in particular diverges as reps climb toward its asymptote — so the widget flags a warning when your reps exceed 10. Individual variation is real: your leverages, bar speed, and rep quality all move the number, so treat the output as a well-founded estimate, not a guaranteed single.
What’s a good bench press for your bodyweight?
Strength is best judged relative to bodyweight, as a bench-to-bodyweight ratio. Enter your bodyweight in the widget’s “Strength standards” panel to see your ratio and tier. As a general reference derived from published standards (Lon Kilgore, PhD / ExRx.net; Kilgore & Rippetoe, Practical Programming), approximate male tiers run from novice near 0.75× bodyweight, intermediate around 1.0–1.5×, advanced near 1.5–2.0×, and elite above 2.0× bodyweight; female tiers scale lower. These are approximate — the underlying tables are non-linear in bodyweight and this is a reference point, not a diagnosis. The classic milestones lifters chase are the plate clubs: 135 lb (one plate per side), 225 lb (two plates), and 315 lb (three plates). Zone framing in the training table (≥80% of 1RM is strength work; lighter loads target power and hypertrophy; training to failure is not required) follows the ACSM 2026 resistance-training position stand.
How to test a true bench max safely
If you do want to verify a true single, ramp up properly. Use the widget’s warm-up sets ramp — empty bar, then roughly 40/60/80/90% of the target — resting fully between heavier sets, and only attempt the single when the ramp feels fast. Benching alone? Set the safety pins or spotter arms on a power rack with safeties at chest height so a missed rep racks itself, and press on a solid weight bench that will not shift under a near-max load. Never test a solo max without safeties — the estimate is there precisely so you rarely have to.

How do I calculate my bench press max without maxing out?
Do a hard set of 3–6 reps at a weight you can control, enter the weight and reps above, and read the estimated 1RM. The formulas back-calculate your single from that submaximal set, so you never have to attempt a true max alone.
Is the Epley or Brzycki formula more accurate for bench?
At low reps they are extremely close; Epley reads slightly high and Brzycki slightly low, which is why this calculator averages them. Brzycki loses accuracy faster above ~10 reps, so for higher-rep sets lean on Epley or Wathan.
What is a good bench press for my bodyweight?
As a rough guide, an intermediate male lifter benches around 1–1.5× bodyweight and an advanced lifter 1.5–2×; benching your bodyweight for reps is a common intermediate benchmark. Enter your bodyweight in the standards panel for your ratio and tier.
How much should I bench for 5 reps if my max is 225?
About 200 lb — roughly 87–89% of your 1RM. The predicted rep-max table gives the rackable load for 2, 3, 5, 8, 10, and 12 reps for your specific estimated max.
Why are 1RM estimates less accurate at high reps?
The equations are fit to low-rep data. As reps rise, muscular endurance and fatigue resistance influence the set more than pure strength, so a high-rep set is a noisier predictor of a single. Keep the input at ~10 reps or fewer for the best read.
Can I calculate my max bench without a spotter?
Yes — that is the main use case. Do a controlled submaximal set inside a rack with safeties set, then estimate. You get your max without ever attempting a risky solo single.
How often should I re-test my bench max?
Re-estimating every 4–8 weeks is plenty for most lifters. Because it is off a normal working set, you can effectively “check” your max any time you hit a hard set of 3–6 reps.
Is my bench 1RM the same as a squat 1RM for the same set?
The estimated number is — 1RM formulas use only weight and reps, not the lift, so every calculator returns the same value for the same set. What changes is the meaning: a given max is far more impressive on the bench than on the squat or deadlift, and the real per-lift difference is small at low reps (Shimano 2006).
