What this squat calculator does

This free squat calculator estimates your one-rep max (1RM) from a set you have already completed — enter the weight and reps and it returns your predicted max squat instantly, then builds a percentage-of-1RM training table, predicted rep maxes, a warm-up ramp, and the exact plates to load. No signup, no math on your part.

Estimating your squat max off a hard working set is far safer than grinding a true single alone, and for most lifters it is more useful — you get a number to program around without pinning yourself under a loaded bar.

How to use it

  1. Enter the weight you squatted (bar plus plates).
  2. Enter the reps you completed with clean depth and control.
  3. Read your estimated 1RM and use the %-of-1RM table below it to set your working loads.

Worked example: 315 lb for 5 reps estimates to about 361 lb (Epley ≈ 368, Brzycki ≈ 354). For the tightest read, use a set of about 3–6 reps — the equations are calibrated for low-rep work and drift as reps climb.

The formulas (Epley, Brzycki & more)

There is no single “true” 1RM equation. This calculator shows five and defaults the headline to the average of Epley and Brzycki, because those two are the most widely validated and their small biases (Epley reads slightly high, Brzycki slightly low at low reps) cancel. All five formulas correlate above r = 0.95 with a tested single (LeSuer 1997) — the differences are absolute bias, not rank. How accurate is it? (squat-specific)

Estimates are best at 2–10 reps, tightest at ≤6, typically within about ±3% in that range (LeSuer 1997; Reynolds 2006 found the 5RM set most accurate). Squats are especially prone to reading high on grind sets, because a determined lifter can force extra reps under fatigue — so a set of 3–6 clean, full-depth reps gives the most honest number. An estimate is a well-founded guide, not a guaranteed single.

Using % of your 1RM to program the squat

The training table turns your estimated max into working loads: strength work at roughly 80% and up, hypertrophy 65–80%, speed and power 30–70% (ACSM 2026 position stand, for load prescription). It maps cleanly onto percentage programs like 5/3/1 and simple linear progression — take the estimate, run the percentages, and re-check every few weeks off a fresh hard set.

Safety when testing a heavy squat

If you do test a true max, ramp up with the warm-up sets, and squat inside a power rack with spotter arms set at the bottom of your range so a failed rep is caught, not worn. Use a rated Olympic barbell that won’t flex unpredictably under a near-max load. Near-max squatting alone is the classic home-gym injury scenario — the estimate exists so you rarely have to.

How do I calculate my squat max without maxing out?
Do a hard set of 3 to 6 reps at a weight you control, enter the weight and reps, and read the estimated 1RM. The formulas back-calculate your single from that submaximal set, so you never grind a risky true max.

How many reps should I use for the most accurate squat estimate?
A set of 3 to 6 reps is the sweet spot — most accurate at 6 reps or fewer, reliable to about 10, then it degrades (LeSuer 1997; Reynolds 2006 found the 5RM set most accurate).

Why might a squat calculator overestimate my max?
Squats often read high on grind sets because lifters can force extra reps under fatigue, which inflates the estimate. Averaging Epley and Brzycki reduces that bias, but treat high-rep inputs with caution.

What percentage of my 1RM should I squat for strength vs hypertrophy?

Epley vs Brzycki — which is more accurate for squats?

Is my squat 1RM the same as a bench 1RM for the same set?
The estimated number is — the formulas use only weight and reps, not the lift, so a set of 315 × 5 returns the same raw 1RM either way, as it does on every 1RM calculator. What differs is the meaning: squat strength standards are higher than bench relative to bodyweight (Shimano 2006 shows the real per-lift difference is small at low reps).
