We are independent — and here’s what that means
Garage Iron HQ does not sell equipment, and we do not accept payment in exchange for a ranking, a placement, or a higher score. No manufacturer can buy their way onto a list or nudge a number upward. Our rankings are driven entirely by the rubric below, applied the same way to every product in a category.
We do earn affiliate commissions when a reader buys through one of our links. That commission is paid by the retailer, costs you nothing, and is identical in structure across the brands we cover — so it never creates an incentive to favor one product over another. How we research — honestly
We are a faceless, data-driven publication. We do not claim to have personally lifted on every product we cover, and you will never see a staged “we tested it” photo on this site. Instead, every score is assembled from sources you can verify yourself:

The rubric — six weighted dimensions
The Garage Iron Score is a fixed, transparent rubric. The same six dimensions are scored for every product in a category, then combined using the weights below into a single number on a 5.0 scale, rounded to one decimal place.

Weights total 100%. A product cannot reach a top score on price alone, and a premium price cannot buy a top score without the build, warranty, and owner consensus to back it up.
Reading the score
The score appears as a circular seal on every review and roundup, reading the product’s number out of 5.0 and the words VERIFIED DATA — our honest label for what the score is built from. A higher number means a stronger overall result across the six weighted dimensions, not a guarantee that a product is right for you. A budget rack and a competition rack can both score well for very different buyers, which is why every score is paired with a plain-language verdict explaining who it’s for.
Balanced verdicts — every score shows the cons
No product is perfect, and a review that pretends otherwise is not worth reading. Every Garage Iron Score is published with a real, specific list of cons alongside the pros. If a product has a flimsy J-cup, a short warranty, or a footprint that won’t fit a single-car garage, we say so — even when we recommend it. A “best pick” is the best trade-off for a given buyer, not a flawless object.
Kept current — last updated and re-verified
Specs change, prices move, and warranties get revised. Every review and roundup carries a visible “Last updated” date, and we re-verify our money pages and scores on a regular cycle — pulling current specs, prices, and fresh owner-review data, and adjusting the score when the evidence has genuinely shifted. We edit pages in place rather than republishing them, so the recommendation you read today reflects what we know today. If a score changes meaningfully, the verdict explains why.
